GoI passes order to allow testing of electric vehicles without batteries (#M0HT)

GoI has allowed the sale and registration of #electricvehicles (#ev) without batteries. The #battery_swapping industry might see a boost in the coming future due to this move of the central government. This decision was made after appeal of industry to de-link cost of battery storage from that of electric vehicles.

This is supposed to reduce cost of electric vehicles and promote battery swapping as a service. This can reduce waiting time for charging and promote quick adoption of electric vehicles.

However, this might require highly skilled staff to swap batteries and someone to look under the hood to see the right placement and connections between the batteries and battery management systems. #Design of such vehicles should be tested thoroughly and battery to be swapped should be either in the front or rear end of the vehicle so that the whole vehicle chaise does not have to be moved just to replace a battery.

Consumers will be given options to either take the vehicle without battery or rent a battery from the seller. But the vehicle and battery manufacturers need to be careful about the situation that the batteries need to be standardized for all similar types of vehicles. Though the problem with standard batteries would be that the consumer would be able to charge the battery by themselves as the batteries would be removable from the vehicles and this would disrupt the business of battery swapping stations.

The battery swapping stations cold earn additional revenue from making systems that could serve as emergency backup for grid stability therefore assuming the position of #prosumers.

Though the #EV and #Battery prototype (regular or and ones that can be swapped) will be required to be type tested and approved by testing agencies as specified under Rule 126 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (#CMVR).
